Bridging the OneStream AI Chasm

By Melissa Welby, Manager of Summit Services, Black Diamond Advisory

The Chasm Is Already Here

A recent client conversation crystallized something I have been seeing for months. The client told us, plainly, “We are so behind.” That moment reinforced what has become increasingly clear across the OneStream community: a real divide is forming between organizations that are continuously evolving their platforms and those that are standing still despite having already invested in OneStream.

On one side, finance organizations are modernizing processes, expanding use cases, and exploring how AI can improve speed and decision-making. On the other, organizations are treating their implementation as a finished project rather than an evolving capability. The gap is becoming more visible every quarter.

AI Is Widening the Gap… and Fast

The uncomfortable truth is that this divide existed before AI. AI has simply accelerated it.

Every quarter a finance organization delays modernization, the leading edge moves further away. Competitors are moving faster. Boards are expecting more predictive insight. Top talent increasingly expects modern tools and forward-looking operating models.

As one client said during one of our planning conversations, “The cliff is getting bigger.”

Organizations embracing AI are building momentum that compounds over time. Organizations delaying action are not simply pausing progress, they are falling further behind as the market advances around them.

The Cost of Inaction

Most leaders agree AI matters, but acknowledgment alone does not create movement. Too often, priorities shift and transformation initiatives get pushed into another quarter.

The risk is not just incremental delay. It is losing the operational muscle required to adapt. Modern finance teams need to ask better questions, move faster, and trust increasingly sophisticated outputs from their systems. Those capabilities only develop through continuous evolution.

A six-month delay today does not remain a six-month delay. While one organization postpones modernization, another is refining workflows, improving automation, and building internal expertise. Over time, that performance gap becomes much harder to close.

What Moving Forward Actually Looks Like

Moving forward does not mean ripping out systems or chasing every new AI tool. It means treating your OneStream investment as a living capability instead of a completed implementation.

For many organizations, that starts with revisiting use cases that never made it into production and identifying workflows where AI can create immediate value, reconciliations, variance commentary, close narratives, and forecast support.

It also means investing in the people who already understand the business and the data. The organizations making the most progress are equipping internal teams to lead transformation rather than waiting for vendors to dictate every next step.

Organizations need a roadmap that treats AI as a capability layer across the finance function, not a disconnected pilot initiative.

How Black Diamond Helps Summit Clients Bridge the Gap

This is the exact gap our Summit practice was built to help clients close.

Most organizations do not have deep OneStream and AI expertise internally, nor do they have the strategic advisory support needed to determine what to prioritize and how to sequence transformation efforts effectively.

That is where our model is different. Smaller firms can provide a consultant. We provide a bench of practitioners with experience implementing these capabilities at scale, along with a clear point of view on where the market is heading.

Our role extends beyond delivery. We help organizations determine what initiatives will create the most value, what should move first, and how to guide teams through the operational changes required to sustain progress over time.

As Liz Fazio, Sales Director at Black Diamond Advisory, often says, “We are helping you invest in the person managing your investment.”

The Bridge Is Open

If you are a OneStream customer wondering whether your organization is operating on the leading edge or the lagging edge, you likely already know the answer.

The encouraging reality is that this gap is still bridgeable. Organizations do not need to overhaul everything overnight to regain momentum. They need a clear direction, a willingness to move, and the right guidance to accelerate progress with confidence.

The cliff is getting bigger, but the bridge is already here. Click here to learn more and connect with our Summit Services team: Summit Services – Black Diamond Advisory
