OneStream Wave 2024, Day 1, Tuesday, 12 November 2024

I write the beginning of this thrilling(ish) daily blog posts on Wave with the mostly very best intentions. It is possible, albeit somewhat optimistic, to try to do this on a daily basis so you, Gentle Reader, can vicariously experience the conference.

Okay, I will try to do this, but as is inevitable with Yr. Obt. Svt. at conferences, this will likely never happen and everything will (I hope) come out the next day as I will get less and less sleep and put this off. In other words, Man proposes, God disposes or perhaps Cameron proposes, Wave disposes.

Update: Hah! I didn’t. I knew I wouldn’t. I’m sorry. And sad. And ashamed. And not the least bit surprised. Despite my failure, I shall carry on bravely, knowing that I’ve disappointed everyone. Again.

That’s when I wake up, bleary eyed, girding my loins for the trip to Philadelphia International from the far-ish exurbs. Living in Philly did make the airport trip a wee bit easier. I wonder if the cab company (215)-AIRPORT still exists in today’s world of rideshare? For sure the cats, Peanut, Pickle, Minty, and Beauregard only want their breakfast, no matter the hour.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, a plane full of families. Will I be able to block out the noise once on the areoplane? Yep, because I have a pair of these and one of these. If you haven’t invested in them, and you try to sleep on planes, and you have functioning ears, pray buy them. You’ll not regret it.

Fingers crossed, the flight will be swift and I will be swiftly asleep.

And, given that I’m writing this on Wednesday the 13th, yes, I did.

Enough of that palaver. You’re here for the content, are (hopefully) sitting comfortably, eyes open, brain ready to receive, and with a sense of mild amusement at the ready, are wondering where my combination of snarky-yet-enthusiastic comments might be, so off to the races we go.

I do not work in OneStream product management or engineering. I do not even work for OneStream. There are roadmaps in this post. What is shown, what is said, what is implied, what is suggested may, or may not, or may partially happen. Maybe. And maybe not. And when it actually happens and what actually happens may look just like what these screenshots show and may not.

In other words, look at some of these horrifically-taken snapshots, be intrigued, think about what you see, but do not bet your application, job, career, and company on any of the above.

Quite seriously, this is not a sales conference, it is a technical one and we are seeing Really Cool Stuff. Again, be intrigued but nothing more until this is officially announced.

You Have Been Warned.

Remember that Wave is a technical conference, not a general conference like Splash. The people are different, the presenters are different, the purpose is different. In short, it is a geek’s (Great Googly Moogly, not nerds) paradise.

Yes.

This is really rather clever.  Instead of attendees wandering from room to room, looking lost, wondering where to go, OneStream comes to us.  One room, three sessions, OneStream comes to us.  Perfection.

Yes!  Yes!  OneStream in a browser.  Finally.  Awesomely.

Finally, finally, finally – Excel functionality is being significantly expanded.  Why finally?  If you (whoever you are) work in FP&A, you live in Excel.  Why leave your favorite tool?

To be clear, this is not a replacement of the OneStream client with Excel, but rather an increase in what OneStream can do in Excel.  Huzaah!

I am merely going to pass over this at a very high level, not because I don’t want to share, and maybe because I don’t understand it, but mostly because there is so much here that’s new that showing a handful of snapshots is simply not going to be sufficient to understand the huge shift that is coming to each and every one of us.

What you see is not all or even much of what OneStream is working on.  There is a lot going on, it is incredibly exciting, and you need to get on board.

Quite seriously, you need to ask OneStream about this and get the information from the source.  It’s not hard to find.

Here’s a few slides to excite you and Great Googly Moogly, see the bits above about safe harbor:  stuff is coming but what and when and how and how I cannot say.

Isn’t this interesting?

Yes, yes it is.

Isn’t this also interesting?

Yes, yes it is.

Think of dashboarding done right and significantly simplified.  There was a ton of buzz around this at Splash earlier this year.  It’s pretty cool.

I cannot (eh, I can) believe I didn’t capture it in action.  Amazing.

The challenge with going to a conference like this is trying to figure out what on earth I should cover and what I can do justice to.

Lest you think that conferences are all seriousness, let me end with a moment of levity:

That is Celvin, my objectively taller younger smarter and subjectively better looking brother from a completely different set of parents, in his Full Diva pose.

Be seeing you.
